Candle Making Problems and How to Fix Them: Tunneling, Frosting, Cracking, and More
Aug 10, 2026If you have ever pulled a candle out of the mold, held it up to the light, and thought "well, that is not what I pictured," welcome to the club. When we started Garsnett Beacon at our kitchen table during the pandemic, our counter looked like a graveyard of rejects. Tunneled candles, frosty tops, cracks running down the side. I remember lining them up and feeling like maybe I just was not cut out for this. Spoiler: we figured it out, grew to more than 160 wholesale accounts and multiple stores in Holland, Michigan, and almost every problem on this list is one we personally fought through.
So if you are learning how to start a candle business and your candles are not cooperating yet, take a breath. These are the most common problems makers run into, and every one of them has a fix.
Tunneling: the candle burns straight down the middle
Tunneling is when your candle burns a narrow hole down the center and leaves a ring of wax stuck to the sides. It is the number one complaint we hear from new makers and customers alike. The cause is almost always one of two things: the wick is too small for the vessel, or the candle was not burned long enough on its first light.
The fix starts with the wick. Your candle needs to reach a full melt pool, meaning the top layer of wax melts all the way to the edge of the jar, usually within two to four hours. If it is not getting there, size up your wick and burn test again. The other half is customer education. We print a simple care card that says to burn the candle until the wax melts edge to edge on the very first burn. Wax has a memory, and that first burn sets the pattern for every burn after it. Frosting: those white crystal patches
Frosting is that white, feathery, almost snowflake looking film that shows up on soy candles. Here is the truth that took me way too long to accept: frosting is completely natural. It is soy wax trying to return to its natural crystalline state, and it does not affect the burn, the scent, or the safety of the candle at all.
You cannot fully eliminate it with pure soy, but you can reduce it. Pour at a slightly lower temperature, warm your vessels before pouring so the wax does not cool too fast against cold glass, and let your candles cure in a room with a stable temperature. Big temperature swings make frosting worse. We actually stopped fighting it entirely on some product lines and started calling it a feature of natural soy on our labels. Honesty sells better than a fight you cannot win.
Cracking and holes on the top
Cracks on the surface usually mean the candle cooled too quickly, often because the room was too cold or the wax hit cold glass. Sinkholes, which are cavities that form under the surface as wax cools and contracts, come from the same enemy: fast, uneven cooling.
The fixes are the same family of moves. Warm your vessels first. Pour a little hotter if your fragrance oil allows it. Let candles cool slowly at room temperature instead of moving them somewhere cold. For stubborn sinkholes, a heat gun run gently across the top will re-melt and smooth the surface, or you can do a small second pour to top it off. When we scaled up, controlling our pour room temperature fixed more of these problems than any single ingredient change ever did.
Rough, bumpy, or uneven tops
Bumpy tops that look like the surface of the moon are almost always a temperature issue too. If you pour when the wax is too cool, it starts to set unevenly. If your room is drafty or cold, the surface seizes before it can level out.
Dial in your pour temperature and stick to it. Keep a simple log of the wax type, fragrance, pour temp, and result for every batch. That log is the single most useful thing we ever did, because it turned guessing into a repeatable process. Wet spots: those cloudy patches on the glass
Wet spots are the areas where the wax pulls away from the glass and leaves what looks like a damp or cloudy patch. They are not actually wet. It is just wax that lost contact with the vessel wall as it cooled and contracted.
Like frosting, wet spots are largely cosmetic and nearly impossible to eliminate completely with natural wax in clear glass. Warming your jars before pouring and cooling slowly will reduce them. But honestly, most of your customers will never notice, and the ones who do will accept it once they understand it is a hallmark of a handmade, natural product. Do not lose sleep over a cloudy patch. Lose sleep over a bad scent throw instead, because that is what people actually buy candles for.
Poor scent throw
Speaking of scent, if your candle looks perfect but barely smells when it burns, that is a whole topic on its own. The short version: check your fragrance load, make sure you are adding fragrance at the right temperature, and give your candles enough cure time before you judge them. The one habit that fixes almost everything
If you take one thing from this post, take this: burn test everything, and write it down. Almost every problem above traces back to a wick, a temperature, or a cure time that you can only nail down through testing. We still burn test new fragrance and wick combinations before they ever touch a shelf, and we have been doing this for years.
Testing is not the boring part of the business. It is the part that separates the makers who quit from the makers who build something real. Your rejects are not proof you cannot do this. They are the data that gets you to candles you are proud to sell.
