How to Choose the Right Candle Wick (A Maker's Field Guide to Burn Testing)

We started at our kitchen table in Holland, Michigan during the pandemic, and I honestly thought wax and fragrance were the hard parts. Nope. The wick is the engine of the whole candle, and getting it wrong is the fastest way to end up with tunneling, sooty jars, or a candle that barely throws any scent at all. Why the wick matters more than you think
A candle is a system. The wax, the fragrance oil, the vessel, and the wick all have to work together. The wick is what pulls melted wax up to the flame and controls how much fuel burns at once. Too small and the flame drowns, leaving a ring of unmelted wax around the edge, which we call tunneling. Too big and you get a flame that is too tall, black soot on the glass, and sometimes a jar that gets dangerously hot. The right wick creates a full, even melt pool without any of that drama.
Here is the part that trips people up: there is no universal "right wick." A wick that is perfect in a soy candle with one fragrance can completely fail in the same jar with a different scent. That is not you doing something wrong. That is just candle physics, and every maker on earth deals with it.
The main wick types
You do not need to memorize every wick series out there, but you should understand the broad families so you know where to start.
- Flat braided cotton wicks are the classic all-purpose option. They curl slightly as they burn, which helps them self-trim. Great starting point for soy and natural wax containers.
- Cored cotton wicks have a paper or cotton core that helps them stand up straighter and burn a little hotter. Useful for thicker waxes or vessels that need more push.
- Wooden wicks give that soft crackle a lot of customers love, and they look beautiful. They are also finicky. They need the right thickness and often a slightly higher fragrance-friendly wax, and they can be less forgiving during testing.
- Specialty and eco series wicks are engineered lines built for specific wax and fragrance combinations. Once you settle on a wax, the supplier's guide for that series is your best friend.
My honest advice for a beginner: pick one wax, pick one wick family, and get really good at that before you branch out. I chased too many variables at once in year one and it slowed everything down.
How to actually pick a starting wick
Start with your vessel diameter, not the wax. Wick manufacturers publish charts that recommend a size range based on the width of your container. Measure the inside diameter of your jar in inches, look at the chart for your chosen wick series, and grab the two or three sizes that fall in that range. You are not looking for the perfect answer here. You are looking for a smart place to begin your testing.
Then factor in your fragrance load. A candle poured at a heavier fragrance percentage often needs a slightly larger wick to burn cleanly, because fragrance oil changes how the wax melts and flows. Burn testing, the part nobody can skip
This is where real candle makers are made. Burn testing is not glamorous, but it is the single most important habit you can build. Here is the process we still use at Garsnett Beacon today.
- Make identical candles with different wicks. Same wax, same fragrance, same vessel, same cure time. The only thing you change is the wick size. Label the bottom of each one so you never lose track.
- Let them cure fully before you light them. Curing lets the fragrance bind with the wax. For most soy blends we wait one to two weeks. Testing an uncured candle gives you results you cannot trust.
- Burn in real conditions. Light the candle and let it burn for the same length of time your customer would, usually three to four hours per session. Watch the melt pool, the flame height, and any soot on the glass.
- Take notes every hour. How wide is the melt pool? Is it reaching the edges by the end of the burn? Is the flame calm or flickering wildly? Is the top of the jar getting too hot to touch comfortably?
- Repeat across the full candle. A wick can behave beautifully at the top and then overheat as it burns down. You only learn that by testing all the way to the bottom.
You are looking for a melt pool that reaches the edges of the jar within a few hours without going crazy, a flame around a half inch to an inch tall, minimal to no soot, and a jar that stays safe to handle. When you find that, you have your wick for that specific recipe. Write it down and guard that recipe like gold.
Common mistakes I made so you do not have to
I sold candles that tunneled because I rushed testing to hit a market deadline. I learned that lesson the hard way when customers told me their candle only burned down the middle. I also assumed one wick would carry my whole product line, and it absolutely did not. Every new scent and every new vessel size deserves its own round of testing. It feels slow, but it is so much cheaper than refunds and a damaged reputation.
The other big one: not keeping records. Early on I would find a great wick, then forget exactly which size and series it was three months later when I reordered. Now every recipe lives in a document with the wax, fragrance percentage, wick series, wick size, and cure time. I promise this gets easier. The first few rounds of burn testing feel tedious and a little discouraging, but at some point it clicks and you start reading a melt pool like a language.
